Deep Tissue Massage

What Is Deep Tissue Massage?

Deep tissue massage is almost exactly what it sounds like. Using a heavier pressure than standard Asian or Swedish techniques, deep tissue manipulation attempts to restore normal movement and relieve pain through the longer, slow strokes. The method is known for the ability to break down knots of muscle pressure in the muscles and connective tissue of the body, making it one of the more effective and favored techniques in spas around the world.

Additionally, a 2010 study found that deep tissue massage was able to facilitate the release of hormones associated with pleasing natural chemicals like oxytocin and serotonin, meaning that after receiving a deep-tissue treatment, patients were more likely to feel relaxed and happy than with some other forms of body treatment.

What You Need to Know About Deep Tissue Massage

You may have heard that deep tissue massages are “supposed to hurt,” and we should tell you why this is incorrect. As you might assume, the experience of pain makes you tense up, meaning that knots in your muscle are more difficult to work out and break down. This means that if a deep tissue treatment is painful for you, you probably aren’t getting every one of the intended benefits from it, and you should ask for a little less pressure (expert massage therapists are more than happy to oblige). You’ve probably seen exaggerations of massage on TV where the recipient is in serious pain. It’s important to remember that this isn’t an accurate depiction of massage in real life, practically anywhere, and especially not at New Oriental Massage.

While the massage itself shouldn’t be too painful, you may feel some pain afterward, due to the lactic acid buildup provoked by the deep, penetrating strokes common with this technique. To prevent this, try to stretch and get loose before your massage. Some people like to relax in a sauna or steam room before the process begins, both of which are complimentary in the luxurious amenities you’ll find at  New Oriental Massage.
